Total IELTS Test Time
The IELTS is a test that evaluates four main components of English: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Approximate test duration is 2:45 hours. Each section deals with a particular aspect of communication that is necessary for studying, working or living overseas. The test is easy to understand and is carried out professionally and organized.
- Listening(30 Minutes): The listening test consists of 40 questions, which students must answer when listening to 4 recordings. Test takers using paper will have extra time to transfer their responses and computer-based test takers will complete the answers on the computer.
- Reading (60 Minutes): There are three reading passages with 40 questions in the reading section. The reading content for the Academic and the General Training tests is different, but the format is the same.
- Writing (60 Minutes): There are two tasks in the writing section. Students might have to: Give oral information, write a letter, or write an essay. These tasks have to be accomplished within the specified time.
- Speaking (11 to 14 Minutes): The speaking test consists of an interview in person with an examiner. It contains questions for introduction, a brief speech and a discussion session.
The three components of the Listening, Reading and Writing tests are taken together on a single day without interruption. The Speaking test may be on the same day or within a few days prior to or after the main test.
IELTS Scoring System
The IELTS test is based on a band score system which measures a student's ability in the English language. Each band is a level of English proficiency with scores from 0 to 9. Students' individual scores for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking are provided, as well as the overall band score.
IELTS Band score provides information for the University, employer or immigration authorities to assess the student's ability to effectively use English in real-life contexts. The higher the score, the better one is able to communicate in English.
| Band Score | Skill Level |
| 9 | Expert User |
| 8 | Very Good User |

| 6 | Competent User |
| 5 | Modest User |
| 4 | Limited User |
| 3 | Extremely Limited User |
| 2 | Intermittent User |
| 1 | Non-User |

Many universities, occupations, and applications for student visas require a minimum overall band score of 6.0. Some Institutions and courses may require higher scores depending on their requirements.
